We beat State Sen. Scott Wiener’s SB 50, and now Senate leader Toni Atkins and others are vowing to pass a big housing “production” bill.
Instead we’re seeing bills by Wiener acolytes that would sneakily piecemeal SB 50 back into existence, including: - AB 725 by Wicks means massive upheaval, wiping out single family and duplex zoning, community plans and general plans. The Assembly approved it, and many were tricked into believing the law focuses new "RHNA" density in multi-family apartment areas. AB 725 does the OPPOSITE. - AB 1279 by Bloom, is a head fake that would create a vague land-use category "High Resource Areas" to allow by-right upzoning to four-plexes in single-family areas statewide, and may override historic and mobile home preservation. It's a mini-SB 50 that produces NO affordable housing.
We must wake legislators in 2020 to the glaring fact that forcing upzoning in our 400-towns & cities is NOT a housing production bill.
Former Santa Monica Mayor Denny Zane, a famed density and transit advocate, jumped into the anti-upzoning movement — a shock to some. Unlike legislators, he has FASCINATING POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS.
