Harvard Study Says Just 35 Minutes of Daily Exercise Can Help Keep Depression at Bay - Inc.com

Many entrepreneurs like to project an image of themselves as solely positive-thinking, productive leaders with a special immunity against negativity, but research has shown that founders are over four times as likely to have a history of depression as the general public.

That's nearly a third of entrepreneurs at risk of having a depressive episode. Some have learned how to manage their mental health issues, but others may still need the tools and information to do so.

Now, research out of Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) finds that blocking out a small amount of time each day for exercise may actually provide a little of that imagined immunity against depression for entrepreneurs, and anyone else.

Public speaking. Attending a networking event. Confronting a coworker. These are uncomfortable tasks, but sometimes need to be performed for us to grow professionally. So how do you move out of your comfort zone? It’s simple: be honest about your excuses; recognize your strengths and take advantage of them; and finally, jump in. If you make a few mistakes along the way, don’t worry. It’s just another part of the learning process.

You need to speak in public, but your knees buckle even before you reach the podium. You want to expand your network, but you’d rather swallow nails than make small talk with strangers. Speaking up in meetings would further your reputation at work, but you’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. Situations like these — ones that are important professionally, but personally terrifying — are, unfortunately, ubiquitous. An easy response to these situations is avoidance. Who wants to feel anxious when you don’t have to?

But the problem, of course, is that these tasks aren’t just unpleasant; they’re also necessary. As we grow and learn in our jobs and in our careers, we’re constantly faced with situations where we need to adapt our behavior. It’s simply a reality of the world we work in today. And without the skill and courage to take the leap, we can miss out on important opportunities for advancement. How can we as professionals stop building our lives around avoiding these unpleasant, but professionally beneficial, tasks?

Why Your Business Should Hire Workers With Disabilities - Inc.com

Valuable employees can come from unexpected places. In the war for talent, small-business owners are finding workers through unconventional channels, such as by hiring adults with disabilities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities fell from 9.1 percent to 7.1 percent between January 2022 and January 2023. That reduction of 2 percentage points represents an even larger decrease than that of people without disabilities, which saw unemployment drop from 4.2 percent to 3.7 percent over the same period.

The reason for the increased employment of people with disabilities? It's just good business.

According to a 2018 study of 140 U.S. companies by Accenture, businesses actively employing people with disabilities generated 28 percent higher average revenues than those that did not, and profit margins that were 30 percent above non-disabled workplaces. What's more: Employees with disabilities who are happy in their jobs are likely to stay in those positions for much longer than their non-disabled peers. A 2018 study found that companies that hired adults with disabilities improved their retention and reduced turnover.
