(8/5/19) reports: "McDonald's has reportedly admitted that its new paper straws, rolled out last year to help 'protect the environment,' can't be recycled — unlike the plastic versions they replaced. The straws were introduced to all 1,361 McDonald's restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland after a trial last year.But the fast food giant acknowledged on Monday that the new versions are too thick to be processed by its recyclers. 'While the materials are recyclable, their current thickness makes it difficult for them to be processed by our waste solution providers, who also help us recycle our paper cups,' a McDonald's spokesman told the UK's Press Association news agency."

(8/5/19) reports: "House Democrats introduced another carbon tax bill Friday, the latest in a series of greenhouse gas pricing proposals to hit Capitol Hill. The 'America Wins Act,' H.R. 4142, would tax carbon emissions starting at $52 per ton and devote a huge chunk of the revenues to rebuilding the nation's infrastructure. Its revenue structure is similar to a bill introduced last year by former Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo, which would have used a carbon tax to feed the Highway Trust Fund. The latest effort is led by Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) and co-sponsored by Reps. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) and Donald Payne (D-N.J.), as well as Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.)."

(8/5/19) reports: "The White House is reviewing the final policy that would roll back Obama-era standards for vehicle emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation submitted the finalized Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient (SAFE) Vehicles Rule to the White House for review on Saturday, the second-to-last step before the controversial rule is implemented. 'Today, after reviewing hundreds of thousands of public comments and undertaking extensive scientific and economic analyses, EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) together have initiated formal interagency review for the draft SAFE Vehicles Final Rule,' the agencies said in a joint statement. 'EPA and NHTSA firmly believe that this rule will benefit all Americans by improving the U.S. fleet’s fuel economy, reducing air pollution, helping make new vehicles more affordable for all Americans and, because new vehicles are safer than ever, ultimately saving thousands of lives
and reducing the number of Americans seriously injured in car crashes.'"
