Rush a donation today to support People For and our slate of endorsed candidates in Virginia! >> Friend, There have been a lot of attention-grabbing elections this year, but perhaps the most important of them all is coming up this November in Virginia. As has been the case for years now, Virginia’s elections continue to be a bellwether for the nation about what to expect in upcoming national elections. Republicans are drooling in anticipation that they will have an opportunity to flip a divided state legislature, which would provide them an opportunity to pass a series of extreme, far-right policies that are opposed by a majority of Virginians and the nation. As Virginia goes, so goes the national fight against abortion bans, book bans and censorship, erosion of LGBTQ+ rights, and more. And there’s a chance Republicans might be closer than ever to achieving that goal. Right now, top Democrats are warning that time is running out to invest in Virginia – and Virginia’s charismatic, wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing leader, Governor Glenn Youngkin, is attracting nationwide attention from Republican megadonors who are eager to invest in Virginia’s elections and see him jump into the GOP primaries if he can pull off an upset this November. [1] But we’re no strangers to the dynamics at play in Virginia. People For the American Way has a long history of making strategic investments in the state when it wasn’t a popular thing to do – which is why we’re proud to share with you today our list of endorsed candidates. We were successful in flipping the state legislature from red to blue in 2019 and we’re confident that with your support we can do it again. All 140 seats in the Virginia state legislature are on the ballot this year. We’ve narrowed down the list of races to 17 of the ones we believe are crucial to progressive victory this November. We’re also proud to have made endorsements in three of Virginia’s commonwealth attorney elections – elected officials who are on the front lines of shaping local criminal justice systems and bringing with them desperately needed reforms. If you’d like to learn more about each of the candidates, please visit our website. There you’ll have the opportunity to read more about their campaigns and find additional ways to support them. Early voting is already set to begin next week, so please don’t wait to make your contribution. It will be put to work immediately in supporting the individual campaigns of each endorsed candidate and allow us to continue growing our get out the vote efforts across the state. Thanks for all that you do, Markus Batchelor
