After September 11, 2001, many wondered if New York City's best days were in
the past, and doubted that Lower Manhattan would ever recover. But 22 years
later, the neighborhood has more residents, more businesses, and more visitors
than ever before. It's home to a memorial remembering those who were lost, a
museum that tells the stories of the day and its aftermath, and — as of this
week — the Perelman Performing Arts Center, or PAC NYC.

PAC NYC marks "the last major piece in the rebuilding of the World Trade
Center site," said Mike at an ceremony inaugurating the center on Wednesday
morning. "And one that will help to open a new chapter in the story of Lower
Manhattan."

What had been a site of destruction will now be home to celebrations of
beauty and life, innovative new ways to create and engage with art, and the
community that comes with sharing those experiences.

"From the beginning of the rebuilding process, our administration believed
that alongside the Memorial and Museum, and housing and commerce, a center for
culture and creativity also belonged here," said Mike at this week's ceremony.
"The arts have helped to fuel our city's historic comeback, and if we keep
investing in the arts, I know that the brightest days for the city are ahead of
us."

The Topline: PAC NYC Facts
Key data points

The exterior facade of PAC NYC is made up of nearly 5,000 Portuguese marble
tiles.

The tiles were cut from a single block of marble.

Each tile is only 12 millimeters thick — less than half an inch — which
allows light to shine in during the day, and out at night.

Using moving walls and elevating lifts that raise and lower sections of the
stage and seating, more than 60 stage-to-audience configurations are possible
in PAC NYC's three flexible theater spaces.

PAC NYC performance spaces can be converted from an intimate 90-seat black
box theater to a 950-seat auditorium.

PAC NYC is the first major performing arts venue in historic Lower Manhattan.

PAC NYC is one of the most innovative arts spaces in the world. See these PAC
NYC facts brought to life in our video about the design and mechanics of the
building.
