An Attack on Democracy, From Racial Voter Suppression to Invalidating Elections Altogether. - US News
Last month, we marked the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington. The journey towards voting rights for Black Americans, though marked by progress, faces new challenges.
From the era of racial voter suppression to today's attempts to invalidate elections, the fight for fair representation continues. The importance of fair maps and equitable redistricting has never been more critical.

In 1963, as the March on Washington was being organized, Sybil Haydel Morial took a stand against discriminatory practices by establishing the Louisiana League of Good Government. This nonprofit was dedicated to helping African Americans overcome barriers to voting, including oppressive literacy tests. Back then, the path to justice and liberty was fraught with obstacles, especially below the Mason Dixie.
And as a native of Birmingham, Alabama -- a city steeped in the rich history of the civil rights movement -- I understand the significance of this struggle all too well.
Today, we confront a different adversary. There's a concerted effort to undermine the democratic process itself, fueled by the increased influence of the Black vote since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 2023 alone, over 300 bills have been introduced across 45 states to restrict voting rights. Alarmingly, some states are even considering legislation that could permit partisan interference in elections.
While recent redistricting decisions provide glimmers of hope, the fight is far from won. The forces seeking to distort our democracy remain steadfast.
