The White House is pushing yet another proposal that would increase hunger for millions of Americans. More than 3 million people would become ineligible for food assistance under this change, the USDA estimates.

The USDA’s proposed new rule would force 42 states, including Alabama, to impose resource limits on people who apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This plan would require states to pay for new red-tape barriers designed to deny food assistance to struggling families.

Here are a few key points you may want to mention in your comment:

  • This plan would deny food assistance to more than 3 million struggling Americans.
  • It would take away free school meals from children who are eligible because they live in families who participate in SNAP.
  • It would hurt farmers and grocers by cutting SNAP dollars that support their products and stores.
  • It would increase state administrative costs, diverting tax dollars that could support other vital public services.
  • It would ignore the will of Congress, which rejected the idea when it passed the 2018 Farm Bill.
