Hi, This summer was the hottest summer ever recorded.1 We’ve seen extreme weather leading to wildfires that destroy homes, woodlands, and make people sick. We’ve seen flooding destabilize entire communities. Climate change is not slowing down. One important step the government can take to fight climate change, protect the environment, and save lives from diseases wrought by dirty air is to reduce carbon emissions from cars. And the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed standards to slash collective automobile emissions by 900 million tons over the next few decades.2 Now, we need the NHTSA to finalize, implement, and enforce these standards on American automakers. Sign the petition: Support new emissions standards to slash car pollution. In addition to curbing the carbon emissions fueling the climate crisis, these updated standards would have direct positive health impacts on neighborhoods that have been choking on car pollution from highways and busy roads, which have historically and disproportionately cut through low-income communities of color. Residents near these major corridors have shouldered the brunt of health risks that come with these environmental injustices. New emissions standards at the NHTSA could decrease incidences of related respiratory illnesses, emergency room visits, and premature death. We need the agency to take the next steps to finalize and implement these new standards on automakers. Every action the government can take to reduce carbon emissions is critical — the fight to stave off climate disaster is urgent and requires no more hesitation. Sign the petition: Slash carbon emissions, fight climate change! Thanks for taking action, Sources:
