PROTECT MORE WILD PLACES

Supporter,

In case you missed the news, last week, President Biden and Secretary Deb Haaland announced plans to cancel all existing oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Next, they are pushing for protecting an additional 13 million acres in the Western Arctic!

The Sierra Club fought to keep this land protected from the oil and gas industry for more than 60 years. We mounted a corporate campaign that pressured every major U.S. bank and many insurance companies from funding oil development in the coastal plain–cutting off outside backing needed for these projects. We built strong, compelling legal arguments over and over again about the impacts to polar bears, one of the Arctic's most recognizable endangered species. And we partnered with the Gwich'in people to pressure corporations and the government to understand how drilling threatens their very ways of life.

I want to ask you to help keep this momentum up by joining the Sierra Club to support our work. Your gifts are the reason the Sierra Club is able to protect vulnerable land like the Arctic Refuge–as well as all of our efforts to keep air and water free from pollution, protect threatened and endangered species, and fight the devastating effects of climate change. Please, become a Sierra Club member today to protect the Arctic and all of our wild places.

We'll also send you our popular Eco-Chic Reusable Bag Set with every gift of $25 or more!

Alaska is my home. I am not only a campaign director for the Sierra Club, I am also a volunteer trip leader here, so I take people out to explore the region themselves. I get to see the connection they develop to the land, and how being outdoors motivates them to protect places like this.

These lease cancellation and conservation rules are a new beginning to protect the Arctic Refuge for future generations and to preserve the Gwich'in way of life. At 19.6 million acres, the Arctic Refuge will remain one of the largest wildlife refuges and last untouched ecosystems in the country. Polar bears, Arctic foxes, wolves, caribou, and numerous other species can continue to thrive here.

This is why your continued support matters to preserve wild places like this, to protect endangered species that thrive in wild places, to help communities everywhere that are threatened by unchecked development, and the disastrous effects of climate change.

Please, make your membership gift today, so we can keep our momentum to protect precious places on the planet for future generations. Our long-held efforts are working.

Don't forget, you'll also get our Eco-Chic Reusable Bag Set if you make a gift of $25 or more!

This decision by the Biden administration fills me with hope, and I want to share this celebration with you. Let's keep going.

Sincerely,

Chris Hill
