I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Demands Answers Over DOJ Possibly Funding Dominican Republic's Detention of Americans I sent a letter calling on Inspector General Horowitz at the Department of Justice (DOJ) to immediately investigate if taxpayer dollars are being used to unlawfully detain American citizens in foreign countries. Nehls Reintroduces the Justice for Angel Families Act Under the so-called “leadership” of Joe Biden, terrorists, rapists, murderers, and other bad hombres are infiltrating our country and committing violent crimes, sometimes taking the life of American citizens. This week, in Stafford, Texas, an illegal alien was involved in a hit-and-run crash, resulting in the death of Cecil George. Sadly, his family is left to deal with the financial and emotional burden of the criminal acts of this illegal alien, with no support from the Biden Administration. I reintroduced the Justice for Angel Families Act to support families like Cecil’s so they can focus on what is important—grieving and rebuilding after losing their loved one. Read more about my legislation HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces Border Security Amendments to the DHS Appropriations Bill The Biden Administration is fueling the crisis at our southern border. House Republicans were given the majority for a reason and have an obligation to the American people to hold this corrupt White House accountable. This starts with stopping the flow of illegal aliens burdening communities, combatting human trafficking, and fighting the influx of fentanyl and illicit drugs poisoning our communities. Take a look at the amendments I introduced this week to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill: Amendment 26: One amendment I introduced would prohibit funding for the processing of asylum claims for illegal aliens that passed through another country with an asylum process in place on their way to the United States. Amendment 48: Amendment 48 would adopt my bill, the Prioritizing the Removal of Migrants Act, which would codify a 2017 Executive Order signed by President Trump in response to the Biden Administration's guidance requiring federal immigration prosecutors to begin exercising prosecutorial discretion in dismissing older cases of immigrants who they do not believe threaten public safety, national security, or border security. Amendment 116: This amendment would prohibit funding to be used to release any single adult illegal alien into the United States that is in violation of section 275 of the Immigration Nationality Act (8 USC § 1325-Improper entry by alien), which requires migrants to enter the United States through a port of entry. Amendment 121: Amendment 121 would block funds from being used to release any single adult illegal alien from temporary detention before having at least one hearing regarding their immigration status. Amendment 165: Amendment 165 would block funding from going to sanctuary cities like New York City or Los Angeles, and other cities that encourage illegal immigration. Amendment 176: Another amendment I introduced raises the minimum of U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) detention beds back to the number of the Trump Administration. Amendment 182: This amendment will prohibit funding to the DHS unless they maintain 14,000 ICE officers through September 30, 2024. Amendment 212: Amendment 212 would move funding from the Office of the Secretary of DHS, Alejandro Mayorkas, to reestablish the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office at DHS, which was established by an Executive Order signed by President Donald J. Trump in 2017 and was dissolved by the Biden Administration. The VOICE Office's mission was to provide services to victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens. The purpose of the office was to act as a liaison between ICE and victims, along with their families, to ensure they would be provided information regarding the illegal alien, including the offender's immigration and custody status so that their questions and concerns regarding immigration enforcement efforts would be addressed. Taxpayer dollars should be used to secure our nation, not further spread the consequences of an open border. I was sent to Congress to fight for Texas, and I speak for them when I say they are sick and damn tired of empty promises. No security, no funding. Read more about my amendments HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces Amendments to Cut Woke Programs at DHS The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should be focused on protecting our nation from domestic and foreign threats, not wasting taxpayer dollars on the woke and radical agenda of the Left and the Biden Administration. This week, I introduced an amendment to the DHS appropriations bill prohibiting funds to force the American people to comply with COVID-19-era mask mandates for airport entry, access, or travel. Another amendment would prohibit funds from being used for DHS's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL). Some of Biden's bureaucrats within the CRCL are involved in the "Abolish ICE" movement, a movement that wants to change the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement from enforcing immigration law to allowing deportable aliens into communities across the country and provide them with taxpayer-funded services. This is unacceptable. DHS should not receive another dime to support Biden’s bureaucrats who are involved in the "Abolish ICE" movement and force American travelers to comply with mask mandates on airplanes. Read more about my amendments HERE. This Week in TX-22 Congressional App Challenge Submissions Are Now Open I am pleased to announce that my office is hosting a 2023 Congressional App Challenge. The Congressional App Challenge (CAC) is a competition designed to encourage student participation in computer science and coding. Students are encouraged to register online and submit their app by November 1st. The Congressional App Challenge is open to all middle and high school students in the 22nd Congressional District of Texas. Students entering the competition must submit their app to CongressionalAppChallenge.us during the Competition Submission Period through November 1st, 2023. The winner from the 22nd Congressional District, chosen by a panel of expert judges, will be featured on CongressionalAppChallenge.us. The winning app will also be eligible to be on display in the U.S. Capitol, honoring the winners from across the country. Service Academy Nominations Are Now Open My office is now accepting Service Academy Nominations. One of the privileges of serving in the United States House of Representatives is the opportunity to nominate outstanding young people from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be considered for appointment to our nation’s service academies. Admission to a service academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must meet the minimum standards set by the individual academy. Second, the candidate must complete the congressional application by October 6, 2023, to be considered for an interview in our office with the nomination review board. Please note, the ultimate selection of appointees rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees.
