Team,
The rules for putting a ballot measure up for a vote should be simple: collect enough signatures from voters, those signatures are verified, and then you’re on the ballot!
But new restrictions on ballot measures are constantly being built. Most recently, an Arizona judge ruled that the way that counties in Arizona validate signatures for ballot measures is illegal and is forcing the state to adopt new ways to count signatures.
The Arizona judge is requiring voter signatures on the petitions to be compared to their original voter registration records for identity confirmation, and ruled out the use of any other document for identity verification.
PROTECT BALLOT MEASURES
Let’s be clear, team — this is not about identity verification or preventing fraud. It’s about silencing the voices of voters. Voters altering their signatures over time is common, and being expected to have the same exact signature from their original voter registration is unreasonable.
This ruling makes the work of organizers on the ground even more intense, in a state where there are already too many restrictions on the rights of citizens to use the ballot measure process.
After seeing voter turnout in states like Michigan and Ohio, extremists are working to stack the deck against us in countless ways. They won’t stop any time soon, but we can’t do it without you. Team, will you chip in $10 or more to help our campaigns respond to a fast-changing landscape like the one in Arizona?
