Today marks over 200 years since Central American countries gained their independence and the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month!
To kick this month off, I wanted to share a photo from this year's Guatemalan Independence Day parade –

John, I am the proud daughter of Guatemalan immigrants. They came to the US over forty years ago, when my mother was still pregnant with me.
Our family – my parents, my siblings and I – lived in a small apartment above our church in Humboldt Park, where my parents did custodial work in exchange for cheaper rent.
They taught me the importance of hard work as they worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, and instilled in me a passion for public service as we often volunteered at our church's food pantry and homeless shelter.
I wouldn't be who I am without their resilience, without their dedication to their community. And now, as the first Latina from the Midwest to be elected to Congress, and the only member from a mixed-status household, I work hard to make my parents proud.
That's why I fight so hard for comprehensive immigration reform, healthcare for all, and affordable housing.

Delia Ramirez has dedicated her life and career to public service and advocating for working families. She is a deeply rooted community leader and public servant whose values are informed by her upbringing as the daughter of Guatemalan immigrants.
In 2022, Delia was elected to represent Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District and became the first Latina Congresswoman in the Midwest. In just a few months in Congress, she has introduced legislation with bipartisan support to help student veterans, is co-leading the Dream and Promise Act, and is introducing legislation that gives tenants the right to organize. Delia also serves as Co-Chair of the Strengthening Democracy Task Force, as well as Vice Chair of the Equal Rights Amendment Caucus. She is a fighter who is determined to deliver for her constituents, and is working everyday to achieve equitable distribution of resources for Illinois infrastructure, clean energy, transportation, housing, healthcare, and jobs. She also advocates for federal resources so that Illinois may continue to be a welcoming state for new arrivals and asylum seekers.
