Labels like “natural,” “organic,” and “local” appear on lots of different food products, but how do we know if these labels are fully accurate? Weak federal labeling laws and fragmented oversight have allowed the food industry to stretch the meaning of labels in order to mislead consumers into purchasing their products.
The Food Labeling Modernization Act would make it easier for consumers to determine the right food choices by bringing transparency and simplicity to our nation’s food labeling requirements. This legislation would require a prominent, standard, front-of-package nutrition labeling system for all packaged foods, require updates to the ingredient list on packaged foods, and apply consumer-friendly labeling requirements.
