The lessons of the past month should be a warning to all of us about how critically important our House Democratic Majority is.

With almost everybody acknowledging Trump’s blatant extortion of Ukrainian President Zelensky, Republicans have strapped on the fig leaf that their President has “learned his lesson.”

Donald Trump’s defiant insistence that he will continue to distort the powers of the Presidency into a vehicle for his personal electoral advantage not only leaves his defenders totally exposed; it puts the fundamental rules of our system of government on the line.

If the House Democrats suffer serious losses this fall, especially given the continuing strong appeal of issues like health care, climate change and increasing the minimum wage, the consensus will be that impeachment was a political mistake.

Of course, this should not deter Members from abiding by their oaths to enforce our basic principles.

Trump and his right-wing allies have already begun a massive fundraising effort to punish impeachment supporters.

They are aiming especially at Democrats who won seats from Republicans in 2O18.
