We have some big news: a SAM-led coalition letter just prevented a key Republican Senator from cosponsoring the SAFE Banking Act!
In recent months, Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has committed to cosponsoring the SAFE Banking Act, a bill that would give the marijuana industry access to US banking services. This bill is a top priority for the banking and pot industries. Yesterday, NBC reported that a SAM’s coalition letter to Senator Tuberville persuaded him to walk back his cosponsorship commitment.

NBC wrote, “Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., had been expected to formally endorse the legislation this week, but he ultimately did not take the step after he faced backlash from law enforcement officials and other conservative groups back home... Smart Approaches to Marijuana Action, a political organization opposed to marijuana legalization, urged Tuberville to oppose the legislation in a recent letter.”
This momentum is meaningful, but the fight is not over yet.
The Senate Banking Committee will be voting to advance the SAFE Banking Act to the full Senate the week of September 25th. While we expect the bill to be voted out of committee, we also anticipate strong opposition from several members. Pro-pot lawmakers will likely try to strike a deal to attach SAFE Banking to other must-pass legislation where it has a higher chance of passing unnoticed or pass as a standalone bill.
We are working to prevent this legislation from passing, but never before has there been a higher chance of SAFE Banking receiving a vote in the Senate.
Please join our fight to oppose SAFE Banking by supporting SAM’s work!
Thank you for all that you do.
