The Mid Bedfordshire by-election is on - let’s do this!

After months of shamelessly ignoring her constituents and her duties as an MP,
Nadine Dorries finally resigned. The date to replace an absent Tory with an
engaged local champion in Emma Holland-Lindsay is now confirmed for 19 October.

That’s less than 5 weeks away!

We have shown that we can win by-elections like this when we all come together
and play our part - and this is no different - we need your help right now.

We need you to come to Mid Bedfordshire and campaign for Emma, delivering
leaflets and knocking on doors. If you aren’t able to make it in person, we
also need people to join our maraphones and donate to our campaign - so there’s
a way to help out for everybody.

The next week is crucial, so please make a difference right now.

Emma Holland-Lindsay is the perfect MP for Mid Bedfordshire
<[link removed]>. Emma grew up in the county and
lives there now, and her experience working for a disabled children’s charity
and campaigning for the UK’s largest women’s organisation, shows she has the
compassion, skills, and experience Mid Bedfordshire and the country needs.

Can you help elect Emma and deliver a blow to this Conservative Government?

Sarah Dyke - our newest MP takes her seat

Following her sensational victory in Somerton & Frome, Sarah Dyke formerly
took her seat in Parliament on 4 September.

Sarah is already working harder than the constituency’s previous absent Tory
MP,demanding an urgent meeting with the health secretary on her very first day
<[link removed]>
. Indeed, her initial top priorities will be addressing the lack of GPs and
dentists in the constituency, as well as tackling river pollution. We can’t
wait to see the success she’ll bring to Somerset.

UK rejoins Horizon

The government has finally agreed for the UK to rejoin the Horizon programme,
the EU’s flagship scientific research scheme. But the delay has caused
‘unnecessary damage’ to our scientists and researchers, according to Layla Moran
MP <[link removed]>, the Lib Dem
Foreign Affairs spokesperson. Scientists will have already missed out on vital
funding opportunities and projects.

Layla called on the government to extend cooperation to other beneficial
schemes, such as the Erasmus student exchange programme.

<[link removed]>Ed Davey MP at
PMQs

With parliament returning from the summer recess, Ed Davey MP used his time at
Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) to ask when the government would finally meet
its 62-day cancer referral target, which it has failed to meet since 2015.

You can watch his question here:

The cost of living crisis

Our research continues to reveal the failure of this Conservative Government
and how unequipped it is to deal with the issues facing the public. On the cost
of living crisis, our research found that food prices have soared by a third in
just two years - the biggest rise on record!

This is terrible news for families across the country, especially with rising
energy and mortgage costs hitting simultaneously. It’s another example of whywe
need to get the Conservatives out of power in order to deliver a better deal
for the British public.

Education is collapsing under the Tories

As the new school year began, 150 schools had to fully or partially close
because of their crumbling concrete.

We’ve found that 36 of these crumbling schools are in Conservative Ministers’
constituencies, including 13 in the seats of Cabinet Ministers. This shows that
Conservative Ministers have been asleep at the wheel while schools crumble in
their own backyard
<[link removed]>
.

We’ve been clear - this is a national emergency. That's why we’ve tabled
dozens of written questions about this topic over the past few months and first
challenged ministers on the issue last January. We’ve alsotabled a motion
<[link removed]>
in Parliament to dock the Education Secretary’s pay until such time as the
schools are fully reopened.

You can watch Lib Dem Education Spokesperson Munira Wilson MP's contribution
to the debate here:
