Friend – Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
Over the next month, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating and uplifting the endless contributions made by the Hispanic community to our nation and culture.
As a proud Latina woman, I reflect on my heritage quite often. I think about my father, Roberto, and his journey here to the United States – a familiar, harrowing journey made by millions of other Latinos across the country.

My dad immigrated from Mexico in 1950. Whenever he wasn’t in school, he worked in the fields alongside my grandparents, picking tomatoes and cotton. After a few years of high school, my dad marched down to the local recruiting office and signed up to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He served two tours in Vietnam and, in exchange for his service, received his U.S. citizenship.
For the Latino community, our stories are vast and varied. No two stories are ever the same. That’s what makes months like these – where we share our stories and amplify our voices – so incredibly important.
Finally I want to express that it’s not lost on me that I’m one of the first two Latinas ever elected to serve Oregon in Congress. It’s the honor of my life to represent and fight for our community every day in Washington.
However, as you know, I’m facing a steep uphill battle in my re-election campaign – just like my dad, I’m committed to serving our country. But to do that I’m going to need your support. Can I count on you to chip in to my re-election campaign today? Your support would mean the world to me.
