Black LGBTQ+ lawmakers protest human rights crisis in Nigeria
Last month, police in Nigeria arrested hundreds of people who were attending a wedding ceremony for a gay couple, humiliating them by parading them in front of the media. Dozens of attendees remain detained and the law is not on their side – homosexuality is punishable by up to 14 years in prison in Nigeria. In response, a group of Black LGBTQ+ elected officials protested the arrest and ongoing human rights crisis outside the Nigerian embassy in Washington, DC.
“We’re here to demand that Nigeria release all the detainees and drop all the charges because in a world that is increasingly recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion, Nigeria discriminatory laws against the LGBT community remain a stain on its reputation,” said Maryland Delegate Ashanti Martinez. “These laws not only perpetuate prejudice, but also infringe upon the fundamental human rights of countless individuals.”
