Unrepresentatives Spotlight: Mike Garcia, California District 27
To defeat the Unrepresentatives, we have to expose their MAGA complicity

Indivisibles,

Our Unrepresentatives campaign is based on a simple premise: There are 18 House Republicans serving in districts that Biden won in 2020. These Republicans are extraordinarily vulnerable because most of them got elected pretending to be moderates, but once they got to Congress, they immediately started siding with MAGA extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Case in point: Mike Garcia joined the most far-right members of the GOP this week in backing a baseless impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Despite the fact that Congress has just two weeks to pass a spending bill before the government shuts down and working families lose access to essential services, Garcia has decided to focus his attention on conspiracy theories and extreme partisan politics.

This is just the latest example of Garcia siding with MAGA Republicans instead of governing and representing the interests of his own constituents. So today, we're going to take a deep dive into Garcia's record of extremism in our latest edition of Unrepresentatives Spotlight:

Photo of Mike Garcia with bullet points listing his voting record: Garcia cosponsored a national abortion ban, voted against certifying the 2020 election, cosponsored voter suppression legislation, and Garcia votes with Marjorie Taylor Greene 91% of the time.

When he campaigns and speaks to his constituents, Garcia bills himself as a bipartisan moderate, but over the last three years, he's proven to be a reliable vote for Donald Trump and his MAGA agenda. Nothing exemplifies this better than Garcia’s vote against certifying the 2020 election -- even after MAGA insurrectionists stormed the Capitol on January 6th.

To this day, he continues to sow doubt in our elections and democracy and uses this doubt to justify co-sponsoring the ACE Act -- a voter suppression bill that would make voting more difficult while making it easier for corporations and wealthy donors to flood our political system with dark money.

If that’s enough to convince you that Mike Garcia doesn't belong in Congress, you can click here to pitch in and support our work to expose his extremism and defeat him in 2024.

Garcia is as much a threat to reproductive freedom as he is to our democracy. In 2021, he signed on to an amicus brief calling on the MAGA Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade. And when they did, he told his constituents that the issue was being returned to the states and their abortion rights would remain protected in California.

What he didn’t tell his constituents was that he co-sponsored a bill alongside Marjorie Taylor Greene that would ban abortion nationwide. Since Democrats blocked the ban, Garcia has turned to other ways of restricting reproductive freedom, including voting against enshrining the right to contraception and the right to travel across state lines to receive an abortion.

Garcia likes to pose as a moderate and his reelection depends on upholding that image. We’re going to do everything we can to expose him not just as a complicit enabler of the MAGA agenda but as an active leader in pushing forward legislation that strips away his own constituents’ freedom to vote and freedom to control their own bodies. If you’re ready to help us, you can click here to pitch in and fund our work to hold Garcia and all 18 Unrepresentatives accountable.

We know how to defeat Garcia. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans in CA-27 and they voted for Biden over Trump by more than 12 percentage points. While Garcia won in 2022 by 6.5 percentage points, he only won by 333 votes in 2020 when turnout was much higher.

Garcia has managed to scrape by in the last two elections because he’s deceived a narrow slice of the electorate into believing he’s a bipartisan moderate. To defeat him, we need to continue holding him accountable by exposing his extreme and out-of-touch voting record.

That’s exactly what Indivisible groups are doing in CA-27. In addition to showing up and speaking out at town halls like the one Indivisible Antelope Valley attended two weeks ago, Indivisibles have joined local progressive partners in canvassing and doorknocking campaigns to spread the word about Garcia’s record of extremism.

This is the kind of consistent, year-round organizing that’s needed to hold the Unrepresentatives accountable. Even though you’re not in Garcia’s district, his extreme agenda puts us all at risk, and flipping his seat is one crucial step toward a Congress that works for the American people rather than MAGA’s wealthy donors. So, we’re counting on Indivisibles from across the country to support our work and help hold him and the other Unrepresentatives accountable.
