John,
Let’s have workers’ backs!
I grew up in a union household and have seen the power of the UAW fighting for workers’ rights and wages.
Today, 150,000 UAW workers have gone on strike, demanding a fair contract. And the Big Three automakers can afford it.
Over the last 5 years, Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis (formerly Chrysler) raked in $250 billion in profits; and they expect another $32 billion in profits this year.1
At the same time, CEOs at the Big Three have seen their own salaries skyrocket by 40% or more. And, the Big Three have showered wealthy shareholders with tens of billions of dollars in dividend payments while spending billions more on stock buybacks to further enrich their investors.2
The UAW workers are demanding a percentage wage increase equal to that of the CEOs, a renewal of their cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), which they forfeited during the 2008 economic recession to keep the automakers afloat, and an end to the two-tiered hiring system that pays many workers less than their peers while doing the same job.
With UAW workers on strike, let’s show massive public support for workers in the face of outrageous corporate greed. Click here to post on Twitter in support of striking UAW workers today!
If you’re not on Twitter, there’s still something you can do.
Click here to send a message directly to the CEOs of Ford, GM, and Stellantis and demand they meet workers’ demands now!
To put UAW workers’ demands in perspective, the Teamsters just negotiated a new contract for UPS workers, which saw their drivers receive a 48% average pay raise over the next 5 years.
UPS also ended the unfair practice of two-tiered wages.
In the past, UAW contracts have set the standard for manufacturing wages and benefits for blue-collar workers nationwide―raising the wages of unionized and non-unionized workers alike.
Together, we’re demanding workers’ rights and wages everywhere, while fighting back against greedy corporations that put shareholder profits over fair pay for their workers.
In solidarity,
Rashida
P.S. I’ll be joining UAW President Shaw Fain and Senator Bernie Sanders at a rally this afternoon in Detroit for striking UAW workers. See the flier below and join us today!
