Thank you Point Loma Nazarene University!
A huge thank you to Katie Hodson from theCenter for Justice and Reconciliation at Point Loma Nazarene University for inviting Border Angels to participate in Cup of Culture speaker series is a forum to foster dialogue about diversity, inclusion, justice and reconciliation.

We are so grateful to be part of this and to PLNU for creating a space for students to learn from diverse perspectives and understand how they can be a part of "interrupting injustice." This year's Cup of Culture theme was:
exploring "Our Systems"- Our goal is for students to understand how systems are created and upheld, how different systems can perpetuate injustice and/or create barriers for marginalized communities, and what a student role could be in enacting change towards more just systems.

It was a pleasure meeting so many young minds so eager and engaged.

If you would like Border Angel to present at your school/group/organization please email us at [email protected].

Federal judge declares DACA immigration program unlawful for second time
A federal judge for the second time found the DACA program unlawful, but held back from ordering the deportation of the nearly 600,000 people who remain in the country as “Dreamers.”

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, first crafted with a 2012 memo under the Obama administration, was likewise found unlawful by federal District Court Judge Andrew Hanen in a similar ruling in 2021.

“While sympathetic to the predicament of DACA recipients and their families, this Court has expressed its concerns about the legality of the program for some time,” Hanen wrote in the 40-page ruling.

“The solution for these deficiencies lies with the legislature, not the executive or judicial branches. Congress, for any number of reasons, has decided not to pass DACA-like legislation.”

Given earlier challenges to the DACA program’s creation through a memo, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2022 underwent formal rulemaking to solidify the basis for the program.

Gay asylum seeker held in ICE detention for 6 years on false claims, filing says
A single mother and asylum seeker from El Salvador has been stuck in an immigration detention center for the past six years despite being granted asylum twice, according to court documents.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana has filed a writ that calls for a federal court in Lafayette to justify why Jessica Patricia Barahona-Martinez continues to be held at the South Louisiana Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Processing Center in Acadia Parish. Barahona-Martinez came to the U.S. with her three children in 2016 to seek asylum from allegedly malicious prosecution by authorities in El Salvador.

A federal immigration judge twice granted Barahona-Martinez asylum, finding that, as a gay woman, she faces persecution by Salvadoran police on account of her sexual orientation. ICE has continuously appealed those rulings and kept her detained based solely on accusations from Salvadoran police, according to the ACLU.
