Dear John
I’ve got some excellent news for you.
Yesterday, further extraction of coal from the Glan Lash mine has been stopped. This is a huge win for people and planet.
Glan Lash in Carmarthenshire was the last opencast coal mine application in Wales. And hundreds of amazing supporters like you successfully objected to the mining proposal. This just shows the power that your collective action and campaigning can have.
We knew the extraction of 95,000 tonnes of coal alone would release dangerous methane emissions. And the extension of the mine would threaten an area of conservation interest.
Council officials recommended that the continuation of mining would threaten wildlife and biodiversity. And yesterday Carmarthenshire County Councillors unanimously rejected the proposal for further extraction of coal.
This comes hot on the heels after councillors in Merthyr Council voted to stop mining at Ffos y Fran this year.
It’s thanks to supporters like you that we’re able to campaign side-by-side with the community to put a stop to fossil fuel projects.
Taking on big companies and governments is a huge task. And our expert planning team worked with determination for years to put a stop to this mine.
If you can, please consider making a monthly donation to Friends of the Earth today so we can keep fighting for a fossil free future.
