Friend, this is the first time in history that the United Auto Workers (UAW) have gone on strike against all of the Big Three automakers here in Detroit.
The auto industry is a critical component of Michigan's economy – and our nation's. That's why, after the 2008 recession, leaders in Washington and Michigan worked hard to rebuild this crucial industry and protect workers' jobs. During those tough years, UAW workers made huge sacrifices to help save the auto industry. In the years since then, the auto industry has rebounded and companies are now making billions in record profits. Now, it’s time that the auto workers helping to power this growth share in those good times.
I'm proud to stand with the UAW in their fight for fair wages and benefits. And I'm proud to fight to defend workers' rights and our unions in the Senate. Like so many Michiganders, I come from a union family. My dad was a public school teacher and member of the National Education Association (NEA). My mother was a nurse's aide who led the fight to unionize her workplace with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Growing up, my parents taught me the importance of our unions and the power of collective action. Today, as the UAW goes on strike, I'm reminded of their lessons and our country's rich history of labor organizing, which built our middle class.
As a lifelong Michigander, a Senator, and the son of a union family, I'm joining the UAW in calling for fair wages, job security and the benefits they deserve.
The fight for labor rights is a fight for all of us. I hope that you'll join me in supporting the UAW and their hardworking members.
Thank you,
Gary Peters
