Dear John,
For over 50 years, Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated in the United States from September 15th - October 15th. This year's theme is Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.
The Latino Caucus of the Democratic Party of Oregon invites you to celebrate with us and reflect upon the histories, cultures, and contributions of the Hispanic community here in Oregon, and to join us as we commit ourselves to the work ahead.
What began as Hispanic Week, established by legislation sponsored by Rep. Edward R. Roybal of Los Angeles in 1968, the commemorative week was expanded to a month by legislation sponsored by Rep. Esteban Edward Torres of California. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the commemoration because it is the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, which marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence and which resulted in independence for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Each year, our community grows and continues to build power as a political force for change and progress in Oregon. It's important to build the political infrastructure necessary to ensure our elected government reflects the diversity of our state and communities.
"The Latino Caucus of the Democratic Party of Oregon will work to register, educate and empower those of Latino descent to become lifelong voters; recruit, train and help elect and appoint Latinos at every level of Oregon government; bring more Latinos into the political process within the state party structure."
We hope you'll take a moment to learn more about our work and consider joining or making a donation! Here are a few ways you can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Oregon, and ways you can support the DPO Latino Caucus!
