Happy Latinx Heritage Month Community!

Today’s kick off, September 15th, corresponds with the anniversary of independence from Spain for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Tomorrow is Mexican Independence Day. Chile’s is in just a few days on September 18th.

This week launches a month-long celebration to honor the rich culture, history, resilience, and priceless contributions of the Latinx community — including San Diego itself.

San Diego Public Library is hosting dozens of events from movie nights, cooking classes, craft days, and more through October 15th! Click here to learn more.

The 2020 Census found that the population of San Diego County is 35% Latinx.

And some of the rich history that built the region is housed right here in District Four.

From the Mexican Land Grant origins of the Encanto neighborhood, to the nation’s first school desegregation case brought by Mexican families in Lemon Grove, to the Chicano movement’s fight for inclusion and recognition of Indigenous roots — our Hispanic ancestors and community members have truly advanced our Community .

Click here to learn how to join the San Diego Public Library in celebrating the culture and history of Latinx and Hispanic communities in San Diego.

Enjoy the celebrations! They’re extra special in our thriving bi-national region!
