So much of what we see on social media is not rooted in reality. And with the rise of artificial intelligence, it is getting even easier to manipulate the media and create false stories. 

Did you hear about the Pentagon exploding a couple months ago? It never happened, but it did raise a false alarm. 

Deep fakes and other AI-generated content make it more challenging than ever for people to know what is real. False tips and dangerous challenges put our health and lives at risk, especially our children. If we don’t do something now, we may miss our chance to protect and build a safer web – where we can trust what we see.

Around the world, governments are urgently investigating how to regulate artificial intelligence to make it safer, more transparent, and more secure. From misinformation and deepfakes to data privacy concerns and algorithmic biases, the potential threats posed by AI and social media are numerous. 

It’s past time for politicians here in the U.S. to take the necessary steps to regulate AI, hold big tech companies accountable, and provide a safer web for our children.
