Friend —
This past Sunday, a man drove his car into two men outside of a Brooklyn migrant shelter. The attack comes on the heels of Mayor Eric Adams’ comments last week saying people seeking asylum would “destroy New York City.”
His reckless, Trump-like rhetoric is already having dangerous, life-or-death consequences, and comes straight from the GOP extremist playbook. Mayor Adams is scapegoating asylum seekers as an excuse to slash city budgets, but we won’t allow these attacks to continue.
Sowing fear and division is not a policy solution – sign on to tell Mayor Adams he must take responsibility for his actions and protect new arrivals seeking asylum.
Republicans have been applauding Eric Adams’ comments – and he’s even been praised by a neo-nazi blog that called his statements “insightful.”1 Instead of welcoming asylum seekers, Mayor Adams is fueling right-wing extremism to shield his drastic budget cuts.
Repeating hate-filled GOP talking points is not the leadership we need. New York has always welcomed immigrants, and we have an obligation to ALL New Yorkers, whether they were born here or arrived yesterday. Cities like New York should be leading on integrating asylum seekers into our communities.
That’s why we’re calling on Mayor Adams to stop the attacks on asylum seekers and push for humane solutions to welcome new arrivals – add your name here.
In solidarity,
New York Communities for Change
