Missouri Shared Prayers [link removed] Devotion
In June, we shifted our focus from exploring specific forms of prayer to resources about prayer. In his book, 10 Prayers You Can’t Live Without, author Rick Hamlin covers topics from prayers at mealtime, praying for forgiveness and praying through a crisis. In one chapter, Hamlin discusses the Jesus Prayer from the Eastern Orthodox tradition. The prayer simply asks: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”
Years ago, seeking spiritual guidance, a pastor suggested Hamlin start his day with the Jesus Prayer. Jesus taught us the Lord’s Prayer notes Hamlin.Jesus taught us the Lord’s Prayer notes Hamlin – to say:
Hamlin notes that Jesus taught us the Lord’s Prayer.
The Jesus Prayer “is one directed to him.” Hamlin turns to it to regain his focus when life is stressful and chaotic.
This prayer assures us we belong to Jesus and encourages us when Jesus is leading us out of our comfort zones. The Jesus Prayer reminds us we are all sinners in need of mercy but also provides comfort in trying times. It is simple enough to be prayed anytime, anywhere throughout the day.
Finally, it is flexible enough to adapt to our needs. The version Hamlin’s friend taught him includes additional requests: “Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a miserable sinner. Make haste to help me. Rescue me and save me. Let thy will be done in my life.”
