We already know that foreign operatives have been weaponizing Facebook to manipulate the American public with micro-targeted disinformation. And now, politicians and their campaigns have adopted this same tactic to deceive voters -- like when Trump’s re-election team launched an ad slandering Joe Biden that featured debunked Ukraine conspiracies. [1]
Facebook’s refusal to take these ads down -- even when they contain demonstrably false information -- puts our democracy at risk.
These ads could discourage eligible voters from going to the polls… spread lies about a particular candidate or party… or even shake the public’s faith in our democratic institutions. And now -- when the American people are especially divided -- the damage caused by these ads could be insurmountable.
If you believe that Facebook should stop letting advertisers try to trick American voters with false information, take action now.
We simply can’t afford another election plagued by disinformation, Friend. And as a platform with an enormous amount of influence -- Facebook must remove politicians’ deceptive ads, promote authentic civic engagement, and make sure Americans are informed and empowered in our democracy.
