Legends of Variety

Wed 20 September
Theatre Royal

When the age of Music Hall was diminishing after the First World War, audiences demanded more sophistication from their entertainment and Variety took over. Weekly Variety tours became forefront, and most towns and cities in the UK had at least one Variety theatre.

Variety is still so popular and this show is exactly that: old-school star performers back on the boards. "Legends of Variety" brings together Anita Harris, Bernie Clifton, The Grumbleweeds, Freddie Davies, Tommy Cannon and TV trickster Paul Zenon for a show filled with comedy and charm.

Godot is a Woman
Godot is a Woman [ [link removed] ]
Sat 16 September
Nonsuch Studios

A silly and seriously important romp that looks at gender and the arts!

In 1953 a man wrote a play about waiting. In 1988 he sued five women for trying to perform it. In 2001 Madonna released "What It Feels Like for a Girl". It's 2023 and we're still waiting.

Since Beckett wrote "Waiting for Godot", he and his estate have notoriously challenged - often legally - non-male companies that wish to perform it. Silent Faces return with their trademark style of playful and political physical theatre, in a whip-smart interrogation of authorial copyright, gender barriers in the arts and the cultural significance of Madonna's 1989 album, "Like a Prayer".
