WG Economy: Inflation Setback Raises Concerns
Over More Rate Hikes
WG Economy | David Winston
September 13, 2023
Back in July, President Biden joked with reporters that "Republicans may have to find something else to criticize me for now that inflation is coming down." This morning's new inflation report showed year-over-year CPI going back up to 3.7% from the month of August, which complicates the bBidenomics narrative about inflation getting better. At a cumulative level, our new Presidential Inflation Rate is 17.4%, meaning prices have gone up over 17% since President Biden took office. The chart shows the comparison of year-over-year CPI and the cumulative Presidential Inflation Rate based on the new report. WG Economy, September 13, 2023.pdf

Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, returned to the U.S. Capitol on Thursday for the first time since being diagnosed with a blood cancer known as multiple myeloma and told reporters his chemotherapy treatment is underway.
"It's kind of a few months process. They don't know yet how long it's going to be - four months, six months - but they want to continue to evaluate and say, 'OK, so how's he doing? How's the treatment?' The treatments are going well so far," said Scalise, who was taking precautions to protect his immune system and wore a face mask and stood back from reporters as he entered the Capitol building. Sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the planning, say it is likely to take place on Sept. 28, one day after the second Republican primary debate. Details of the planning were shared by a Biden advisor with Democratic donors on Wednesday in Chicago, the sources said. Read more

"These allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption," McCarthy said. Read more

NY Times | Maggie Astor, Andrew Fischer, and Eleanor Lutz
September 12, 2023
At least six candidates appear to have made the cut so far for the second Republican presidential debate on Sept. 27. Former President Donald J. Trump, the clear front-runner in polling, did not attend the first debate. It is unclear whether Mr. Trump will take part in the second, in part because he has not signed a pledge to support the eventual nominee. Read more

'Virginia Is the Test Case': Youngkin Pushes
for G.O.P. Takeover This Fall
Glenn Youngkin, a popular Republican governor with national ambitions, is trying to help his party take full control of state government in crucial legislative races this year.

Virginia, whose off-year elections are usually closely watched as an indicator of the national mood, has been mostly out of the spotlight this year, overshadowed by the Republican presidential primary and the looming general election clash.
But with every seat in the Legislature up in eight weeks, the stakes are unusually high, with Republicans in position to swing the entire state, just four years after Democrats did the same. The effort, led by Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a popular Republican with national ambitions, is likely to serve as an early read on the politics of 2024, spinning out lessons for both parties, especially on abortion.

Associated Press | Marc Levy
September 11, 2023
Republicans trying to recapture the U.S. Senate majority have the candidate they want in Pennsylvania. Now they just need David McCormick to run.
Almost since the moment he lost last year's Senate GOP primary, McCormick has floated the possibility that he would again seek the party's nomination for the U.S. Senate, this time to challenge three-term Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.
McCormick has shown up at local party events, raised money for Republican candidates, hired staff, done a publicity tour for his new book, and made the rounds of conservative podcasts. In short, everything a candidate might do - except announce his candidacy. Read more

The Biden campaign is rolling out a new ad promoting the President's economic agenda. The ad says inflation is down to 3%, and that the President has taken action on "fixing supply chains, fighting corporate greed, passing laws to lower the cost of medicine, cut utility bills and make us more energy independent." They are putting $25 million behind the ad to run the NFL opening game, on all three major cables and in battleground states. WG Discussion Points, September 8, 2023.pdf |
