The homeless population is "greying" in New York City, Boston, and Los Angeles, University of Pennsylvania researchers have found. New York City is in the middle of an emerging crisis of aging homelessness, according to their 2019 report. At a panel discussion hosted by a foundation, they projected that costs for shelter, hospital, and nursing home services for the elderly homeless just in that city will reach about $460 million a year by 2030. Working Across Sectors To Improve Health For Older People: The Community Care Connections Program

By Elisa Fisher, Kelley Akiya, Annie Wells, Yan Li, Christine Peck, and José A. Pagán (January 30)

With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, researchers at New York University and the New York Academy of Medicine evaluated the Community Care Connections (CCC) program, which aims to integrate social services into medical systems of care. There are some promising results from the 2016 to 2019 time period—for example, CCC program participants experienced a 29 percent reduction in inpatient hospitalizations. Read More >>

Funders’ Support For Water And Sanitation Efforts

The February 2020 GrantWatch column highlights what foundations are doing in the areas of improving drinking water quality (which "has a major influence on public health," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), and sanitation. Efforts in other countries and in the US are highlighted. Some people forget that even in the United States, having "clean water is not always assured," the CDC says. Funders from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and more have funded in these areas. A CLOSER LOOK—Alcohol In The Military

Unhealthy alcohol use in the military remains a serious threat to health and military readiness and raises the question of how to improve detection that facilitates diagnosis and treatment. A Health Affairs journal article says that routine post-deployment alcohol screenings represent an opportunity for timely intervention by the Military Health System for military members whose results indicate elevated risk for alcohol use disorder.
