Refreshing a 60-year bond with Japan?s Hyogo Prefecture

A Wednesday handshake between Gov. Jay Inslee & Gov. Motohiko Saito of Japan?s Hyogo Prefecture on the steps of the Washington State Capitol renewed a relationship that has endured for six decades.

Saito and Inslee met to discuss contemporary issues affecting their regions including climate change and creating clean energy jobs. And they also enjoyed a reception to celebrate the historic anniversary and reflect on the importance of international relations.

Wednesday?s occasion was Inslee?s third such with Hyogo Prefecture. In 2013, the recently-elected Inslee hosted the?50th anniversary?of the relationship at the Washington State Capitol, and?planted a flowering dogwood tree?next to the Temple of Justice with help from Hyogo Prefecture?s former Gov. Toshizo Ido. Inslee later visited Ido in Japan in 2015.

Much like the tree planted by Inslee and Ido, this historic relationship remains in great health.
