Federal Government to Remove GST on New Rental Housing Builds
Globe & Mail

The federal government will announce the removal of the GST on the construction of new rental apartment buildings today.

This has been a key CHBA ask, as it would help to lower the cost of labour and materials for homebuilders, improving affordability in communities across the country.

The government originally promised to remove the federal tax on rental construction during the 2015 election campaign.

Home Builders Applaud City Housing Needs Assessment But Warn of Roadblocks
CASTANET

While Kelowna is issuing building permits at a "record-breaking" pace according to CHBA CO, the local association warns that economic uncertainty and roadblocks such as a lack of trades and high fees associated with building new homes could keep the city from meeting its ambitious housing targets.

Cleaning Up in the Porta-Potty Business
Globe & Mail

In July, the Ontario government enacted workplace legislation to increase the number of toilets required on construction sites and impose new lighting, privacy, and cleanliness rules. The changes also require that, on worksites with five washrooms or more, at least one must be for women only.

British Columbia, noting the changes in Ontario, is currently in a battle over the state of portable toilets on construction sites, with unions doubling down on a campaign first launched in 2021 to pressure the province to improve washroom conditions — a new report from BC Building Trades says "very little has changed" since then and that plumbed, portable toilets with drainage and running water are still rare on worksites.

Industry (including CHBA BC) is pushing back, and consultations will take place later this month. You can read more about the topic here in the Globe & Mail.

If you have feedback on the issue, please submit it to [email protected] by September 25.

CHBA's Home Buyer Preference Survey is Now Open
CHBA

Want to know what home buyers are looking for in a new home? What features they will trade off to get what they want? CHBA's annual nationwide market research study is now open. This is the largest market research study on new home buyer preferences in the country and a huge member benefit.

It takes just two minutes to sign up, and then 15 minutes of an administrator's time to provide a list of your recent buyers. In return, you'll have your customers surveyed on a variety of topics including why they bought where they did, why they picked you as a builder, what features were important to them, and what they're looking for in their next home.

More information on this year's survey is available here.

Renovators: Give Your Feedback to Inform the Future of Climate Resilience of Retrofitting Existing Residential Buildings
CHBA

CHBA is calling on members who undertake renovations to complete The National Research Council's (NRC) public survey on its new Resilient Residential Retrofit (R3) Research Theme. The survey results will inform the research focus for the project directly and will be explored in more detail in a set of workshops in the fall of 2023.

Over the last two years, CHBA members and staff have worked with many organizations in understanding and bringing an industry perspective on how climate change resilience can be best applied to homes — whether it is to make homes resilient to wildfires, floods, hailstorms, or tornadoes. Understanding local climate risk and integrating resilience measures into the house-as-a-system approach seems to be the next big challenge (and potential opportunity) for renovations and renovators.

The survey is available here until Friday, September 15.
