Hey you rebels, radicals and utopian dreamers out there,

We just lived through the hottest summer in human history. Floods, fires, calamities on a scale unimaginable. For a few days in July, the whole of the Northern hemisphere was on fire.

And then it rained. And we were like, Whew, glad that’s over. But of course it isn’t over. None of this is over. It’s just beginning.

This Sunday, on the 12th anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, a monumental climate action kicks off all around the world. Leading the way will be a March To End Fossil Fuels powered by a coalition of over 1,200 grassroots and national organizations urging President Biden to take immediate action.

But something doesn't feel quite right here. It's all too vague, too abstract for its own good.

It feels like a replay of what happened with Occupy Wall Street twelve years ago. Hordes of us descended on lower Manhattan. A righteous pulse reverberated around the globe — 2000 spin-off Occupations in 60 countries. We had a lot of fun and politicized a whole generation. But at the height of the uprising, when we had the ear of the world, we didn't know what to say. We didn’t have our memes figured out. We never came up with an answer to that question on the poster that launched it all: What is our one demand?

This time, our one demand to world leaders must be crystal clear:

Declare a Global Climate Emergency by years end or we’ll take your doomsday machine down!

Unless we get our leaders to feel it — unless millions of us hold their feet to the fire — nothing will happen.
 

So here’s the game plan:

Whack it up on lampposts everywhere
 

Email it to your president or prime minister
 

Blow it up big and post strategically

Help us buy full-page ads in The New York Times and Washington Post and explode 15-second mindbombs on the evening news

And #FuckItAllFriday after Friday, in hundreds of cities around the world, let’s ramp up the intensity of our civil disobedience until our leaders huddle up and say, OK, let’s talk. Let’s name this thing. Let’s call it a crisis.

If we can do this, the floodgates will open. We’ll be in a position to issue our second demand: End all subsidies to oil companies . . . and on and on it goes.

It will be the beginning of a new chapter in the human story. After centuries of rule by kings, emperors, tyrants, mad men, fascists, communists, military dictatorships and mega corporations, we the people of the world will take charge of our own destiny and start calling the shots from below.
