WIIS Brussels Virtual Consultation on Women & Security – with Women from Afghanistan

On September 19, 2023, WIIS Brussels will reconvene a Virtual Consultation to discuss evolving concepts of security and what role communities play in shaping a secure environment for individuals. Attendees will be joined by a group of Afghan women from various backgrounds and professional portfolios, including human rights defenders, artists, media professionals, gender experts, and others. Participants are encouraged to engage beyond their professional expertise and share personal accounts and perceptions of security.

Upcoming WIIS Professional Development Event

WIIS HOA at Africa Climate Week 2023

During the first week of September 2023, The Africa Climate Summit convened in Nairobi, Kenya. WIIS Horn of Africa (HOA) was in attendance alongside a wide range of stakeholders, including government representatives, policymakers, civil society organizations, and youth representatives from Africa. This annual Summit aims to provide a comprehensive platform for dialogues addressing critical climate-related challenges and opportunities across the continent and beyond.

SecurityWomen Conference 2023

On October 18, 2023, in partnership with WIIS, SecurityWomen will host their London Conference on Security Reform through a Gender Lens. Attendees will explore, SecurityWomen's case study on the UN Peacekeeping mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and will look at progress in peacekeeping reform. The Conference will feature what lessons can be learnt and what further action can be taken to ensure gender equality in the world of defense and security.

WISCOMP Celebrates 25th Year Anniversary
In 2023, WISCOMP (WIIS India) celebrates 25 years of action and commitment towards nurturing constituencies of peace and promoting cultures of pluralism and coexistence in South Asia. Originally established as an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, for the past two decades WISCOMP has grown into an integral agency of support and promotion of women leadership. A heartfelt congratulations to WISCOMP on reaching this monumental milestone.

WIIS Germany Celebrates 20th Year Anniversary

On November 16, 2023, WIIS.de (WIIS Germany), will be celebrating its 20 year anniversary in a celebratory event; Security Strategies and Cooperation for the Next Two Decades.

WIIS.de is led by a dynamic group of women who continue to focus their creative efforts on supporting its members through a combination of activities and professional opportunities. The WIIS Berlin office supports smaller regional groups in Hamburg, Köln/Bonn, and Munich. In addition to these opportunities for members, WIIS.de is organizing an event in Berlin for the interested public.

From Exception to Norm: Closing the Women, Peace, and Security Gap Through Joint Professional Military Education

Tahina Montoya (Defense Fellow, WIIS) and Joan Johnson-Freese (Senior Fellow, WIIS) explore the passage of the 2017 Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) framework within the United States and examine a 2022 Congressional report evaluating the four government agencies charged with its implementation. The authors emphasize that education and training are an essential component for advancing WPS implementation within departments.

Affirmative Legislation for Women’s Substantive Political Representation

Even as the Women’s Representation Bill gathers dust, WISCOMP has published a monograph discussing alternatives to affirmative legislation proposed by pioneering journalist Rami Chhabra. Chhabra’s work called for the feminization of political action, re-introduction of double-member constituencies, and delimitation exercises to downsize constituencies. The discussion focused on the trajectory of the Women’s Representation Bill and measures for recalibrating accountability and equity in politics.
