Countering Threats to Academic Freedom Global Problem Requires "Doubling Down on Ethics"
There is a global pattern of declining academic freedom, often driven by powerful political interference with core functions of academic communities, states a new paper in the Journal of Medical Ethics coauthored by Hastings Center President Vardit Ravitsky. The paper argues that countering threats to academic freedom requires doubling down on ethics, specifically standards of justice and fairness in pursuing knowledge. Read more.
Can AI Improve Health Care for Everyone? Despite Obstacles, AI Can Help Address Disparities
A Hastings Center event yesterday explored the potential of AI systems to improve diagnosis, treatment, and research and even to bring better and fairer health care for all. The problem of biased “junk data” fed into AI systems is real and must be corrected. But there is reason to hope that AI can help address disparities. The event featured Dr. Nicol Turner Lee of The Brookings Institute and Dr. Danielle Whicher of Mathematica, and it was moderated by Hastings Center senior research scholar Josephine Johnston.
