Hi there,

At the end of August, we hosted a letter writing event with our partners at March for Our Lives to write letters focused on gun violence prevention to young voters in Virginia.

We heard so many moving “why I vote” personal stories from letter writers during the event, and we wanted to share a few of them with you:

“I vote because it is the best way to protect my children's present and future. Every morning when I kiss my kids goodbye before putting them on the bus, I wonder if it will be the last time I see them. This is why I vote for representatives who are working to end gun violence.”

“I vote because when my son graduated from high school, I cried, not because I was proud of him, but out of relief that he survived public school and sadness for those parents who did not get to see their children graduate. I am hopeful that gun violence in schools will become a memory. If we vote for representatives who are working to end gun violence, we can make the difference that saves lives.”

“In teacher training for my Sunday School, we spent an hour talking about how to survive an armed intruder. It breaks my heart that children don’t get to feel safe at school or at their houses of worship. I vote for leaders who move beyond thoughts and prayers to actually making a difference. We deserve safe places to live, learn and grow.”

If you’re looking for additional guidance for crafting your own "why I vote" message—especially as we experiment more with the effectiveness of personal stories and issue-focused messages in our Vote Forward Labs campaigns—[check out our personal storytelling guide for quick tips and useful prompts]([link removed]).

There’s still plenty of time left to [write letters to Virginians]([link removed]
), including in our experimental campaigns focused on writing to young voters about gun violence prevention, climate action, and reproductive freedom. We’re aiming to write to hundreds of thousands more voters before the end of October, and we can only do it with your help.
