It’s official, folks. After weeks of pressing the White House and the DNC for more support, national Democrats announced a major emergency investment in Virginia’s upcoming legislative elections. With Republicans gaining momentum here in Virginia, Tim Kaine and I knew we had a responsibility to sound the alarm from the ground.

So now President Biden and the DNC are sending critical resources we need to win in November—including support for the Virginia coordinated campaign’s “Majority Project” get-out-the-vote program.

This is good news, folks. But the truth is, we’re facing a tough fight this November. While support from Democrats in DC and around the country is essential, we can’t win the General Assembly without grassroots support from folks like you. So I’m asking: Can you join Democrats’ nationwide efforts to turn Virginia blue by donating anything you can today before our mid-month fundraising deadline?

The reason I want to pull back the curtain on some of the national politics at play here is because this isn’t your average election. We’ve already seen this year that local elections can have national implications. Take Wisconsin and Ohio for example, where abortion advocates just pulled off some massive wins on reproductive health care, proving to the country that if organizers put in the work and turn out voters, Democrats can do big things for Americans in states that have been impacted by the overturning of Roe v. Wade .

This election has consequences that could carry far past the Commonwealth. Winning in November can give us the momentum we need to re-elect Biden in 2024. We have the opportunity to pave the way for the nationwide elections next year.

And with both chambers up for grabs, the VA GOP logging record-breaking fundraising numbers, and the fate of abortion in the South, gun safety laws, and the right to vote all resting on which party controls the state legislature, I knew that we had no other choice but to sound the alarm about just exactly how much is at stake in this election. And I couldn’t be more thankful that that alarm was heard.

Frankly, I really do believe that if Democrats around the country band together with this grassroots movement, we can win in November and make history for our state and country.
