Hi John,
We are at a pivotal point in our country’s history. Our democracy is being tested in ways many of us have never seen before and, at times, it can feel like we have no recourse as regular citizens. But I’m here to tell you -- there is so much we can do to make a difference.
February is Black History Month and I have been encouraged by all the work I’ve seen in the past month to expand our electorate to include more young people and people of color.
Our community has traditionally been targeted and discriminated against at the ballot box for centuries. But despite all of the challenges we’ve faced we continued to fight for our rights as American citizens to make our voices heard. Just as our families and ancestors stood up for us, we must now stand up for ourselves and others. I’m so proud to be on a team working hard to change the culture around voting. As our founding co-chair Michelle Obama says, “When we all vote, we can bring a new day for this country that we love.”
Watch a special message from Michelle Obama and Common in our latest video to celebrate Black History Month.
In the video, Michelle Obama and musical artist Common recite Lift Every Voice and Sing, known as “The Black National Anthem” written by civil rights leader James Weldon Johnson. This beautiful anthem captures the essence of the African American experience, the spirit of our community and the undying hope for the promise of America to become the practice.
As we close out Black History Month, let’s make sure that we recommit ourselves to ensure that our voices are heard loud and clear all year long. We need everyone to make real change in this country by getting more people registered and out to vote on Election Day. Primary elections are happening all across the country right now and November will be here before we know it.
We’re changing the culture around voting and we need you with us.
Thanks for being part of this team!
Stephanie
