Dear friends and partners,

The school year is in full swing at LA Unified—with kids exploring new interests, families attending back-to-school nights, and even a student mariachi band helping the Board ring in Latino Heritage Month!

As our school communities settle into the new year, our work continues to accelerate progress and build a better LA Unified for our kids and families. This week, the Board approved a telehealth pilot program and nursing partnership to ensure students have prompt access to the support they need, as well as nearly $40M in new campus infrastructure and green space investments, including a new outdoor classroom for some of our youngest learners at Board District 4’s Vanalden EEC.

Finally, even as summer turns to fall, the ongoing climate crisis continues to keep temperatures high. Last year, I wrote an op-ed ([link removed]) about the prohibitive costs and regulatory barriers that make it more difficult for kids to get the shade they need on our school campuses. Our advocacy resulted in a new bill, SB 515, that removes red tape and administrative barriers to help accelerate the construction of playground shading. If you want to help ensure that our kids have access to greener, more resilient schoolyards and lasting protection
from extreme heat, click here to send a letter of support urging Governor Newsom to sign SB515 into law ([link removed]) .

It has been a busy back-to-school season in BD4! My team and I were thrilled to join the 2023 Teachers of the Year celebration, the District's first Region West Principals' Meeting of the year, the LAX Coastal Education Foundation meeting where they announced a $50,000 donation to local Westchester schools, an Open House for the upcoming Lulu's Place project that will benefit LAUSD students and school communities, a Venice Community Housing event, and kick of Latino Heritage Month with a visit from the San Fernando High School mariachi band!
In the Spotlight: Teaching Interns Travel from France to Richland Ave!
Local District West / Region West Richland Avenue School is proud to host five incredible teaching interns from France—Felix, Kae, Lilia, Noemie, and Yannis. Teaching Interns are native French speakers recruited by the French Embassy in collaboration with France Education International, a joint agency of the French Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This program is extremely prestigious—there are only about 50 interns placed in the United States and Richland's French Immersion program is grateful to be one of this year's chosen placements!
