Families forced to flee their homes don’t have time to prepare for frigid
temperatures. Rain-soaked clothes deepen the cold, bringing illness and
threatening lives.

Right now, we’re focused on keeping people warm. Our recent
needs-assessment identified that people lack even the basics to protect
themselves against freezing temperatures — tarps, plastic sheeting for
shelters, small electric heaters, bedding, blankets and winter clothes.
We’re also continuing to provide food, clean water and hygiene kits to
those who need the most essential aid.

A Mercy Corps team member puts labels on Winter Kits that include items
like a floor mat, double blankets, mattresses and a tarpaulin.
Mark Lowcock, the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs,
recently warned that the Syrian conflict is "the biggest humanitarian
horror story of the 21st Century." I wish I could say when the nightmare
in Syria will end. I can’t. But we each can choose how we show up to help
those in need — the moms and dads and kids just trying to make it through
another day.

Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights, has
said there is now "international indifference" to the number of people
dying in Syria. Please help show that there are people who care.
