August Recap Dear Friend, September marks the end of summer and the official start of college football. I am sure we are all awaiting the much-anticipated cooler temperatures and beautiful foliage fall will bring in just a few short weeks. After a month-long district work period, my colleagues and I are headed back to Washington. Each year, during the August recess, I bring my entire Washington staff to the Congressional District so they can meet the people we serve. While they were here, we visited with local businesses and hosted events across the district. I hope you will take time to check out some of the things my staff and I did across the district in August in the newsletter below. As always, it is an honor to represent you in Congress. Sincerely, Gary Palmer Around Alabama’s 6th District Meet and Greets I always appreciate the opportunity to hear from people about their views on the issues confronting us, to answer their questions and to share my ideas. Thank you to everyone who came to our meet and greet events in Trussville and Alabaster. Hearing directly from you is vital to my ability to be effective as your representative. Trussville Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast It was great to be with Mayor Buddy Choat for the Trussville Prayer Breakfast. I enjoyed hearing an inspiring message about the power of prayer from Jeremiah Castille and seeing so many from the community and surrounding communities come together to pray. In addition to the prayers, based on what I heard, Trussville is blessed with some excellent singing voices. Parker Towing Company Thanks to Parker Towing Company for hosting a tour aboard one of their tugboats at Birmingport. Birmingport is an underutilized resource that could have a bigger economic impact for central Alabama. It was good hear from the people working on the tugboats that navigate Alabama’s waterways. Bundles of Hope Thanks to Executive Director Lindsay Gray and staff for showing us the Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank facility. My staff and I enjoyed learning about their work helping mothers and caretakers in the Birmingham area. U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center Workshop Thank you to the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center for inviting me to speak at their workshop on energy security in Huntsville this year. Hoover Tactical Thanks to everyone at Hoover Tactical for meeting with us and giving us a tour of your facility. Mercedes-Benz Battery Plant Thanks to Mercedes-Benz for giving us a tour of their battery plant in Bibb County. Thankful to have companies like Mercedes-Benz for providing jobs and making an economic impact in central Alabama. Warner Museums We enjoyed visiting Warner Museums in Irondale and learning about their company and the innovative exhibits they have created for organizations across the country. Culton Companies is another company in the 6th District with a great national reputation. Nelson Brothers and Vulcan Materials Thank you to Nelson Brothers Explosives and Vulcan Materials for speaking with us about the use of explosives in mining and construction projects. We enjoyed being able to learn about your work and see a demonstration at the Vulcan quarry in Calera. Buffalo Rock Company We had a great morning visiting the new distribution warehouse for Buffalo Rock, an independent Pepsi bottling company. Buffalo Rock has installed state-of-the-art distribution equipment for receiving and transporting many different products they represent while providing excellent jobs in the sixth district. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Air Traffic Control All across our nation our airports are struggling with making sure that they have adequate numbers of well-trained air traffic controllers. As you might imagine, air traffic control can be a very high stress job. In order to get better informed about the training required and to learn how air traffic controllers do their job, we visited with the air traffic control team at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. The Traffic Controllers at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport did an excellent job of explaining the training required and the workload demands they experience every day. We very much appreciated them letting us come by for a tour and teaching us more about the industry. Generations Radiotherapy & Oncology, PC It was great being able to speak with Dr. Christopher Jahraus about his facility and the challenges that family-owned healthcare facilities are facing. Dr. Jahraus did a great job showing us the equipment and technology he and his staff use to treat people with cancer. He also educated us about the issues facilities are facing that are threatening the viability of cancer treatment centers and the impact on patients. Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve We enjoyed being able to take a tour of the Ebenezer Swamp in Montevallo. This swamp is just one example of the ecosystems vital to Alabama. Thanks to Dr. Stewart and other members of the staff at the University of Montevallo for giving us a tour. Gardendale Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Thank you to the Gardendale Chamber of Commerce for inviting me to speak at their luncheon. It is always a pleasure being able to talk with local business owners and community members about the issues facing our nation and to hear from them about local issues.
