Dear John,

We are excited to share with you our second episode of our new health equity podcast, Research and Justice For All. The first season is sponsored by CVS Health, and you can read more details about the series below.
Workforce Departures
Entries from industry into government and exits from government to industry can leave government agencies more vulnerable to regulatory capture.

In the September issue of Health Affairs, Genevieve Kanter and Daniel Carpenter track industry entries and exits among 2004–20 presidential appointees to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

They find that nearly half of appointees examined came from another position in government, and 15 percent came from industry.

Postappointment, however, about 30 percent of appointees exited to industry, and exit rates to industry did not differ substantially by appointment characteristics.

Kanter and Carpenter also find that a change in administration and prior employment in industry were both predictors of an exit to industry.

Additionally, the CDC, CMS, and the Office of the Deputy Secretary had the highest predicted probabilities of industry exit.
