Mekeland

Dear Neighbor,

There is a safety problem in our schools, but 44 Democrat lawmakers have declared they do not support a fix to the bad law they created that has left dozens of schools without school resources officers.

This issue cropped up after Democrats earlier this year enacted into law new prohibitions on the use of force in schools,?banning certain physical holds by ?an employee or agent of a district, including a school resource officer, security personnel, or police officer contracted with a district."?This has caused school resource officers to be removed from numerous Minnesota schools, putting students, teachers and staff at risk.

We could fix this problem if the governor would simply call a special session. Except the governor has given no indication he will do so and continues marching to the tune of the radicals that wrote this new law. He?s acting like this issue is resolved instead of listening to education leaders, law enforcement, and parents who are asking us to fix this problem so school resource officers can return to their positions.

This total lack of leadership by our governor is an insult to student who was severely beaten [ [link removed] ] at Mankato East High School on Friday. The director of student support services in Mankato was quoted [ [link removed] ] as saying, ?Having an officer on site, they?re right there. It?s very fast. It will take a couple of minutes for other officers to arrive through 911. ? An SRO can read the situation and make the correct judgment call on the type of support that they would need to bring in.?

In other words, an SRO potentially could have de-escalated Friday?s situation much sooner, mitigating the physical harm to a student.

This needs to be fixed and it needs to be fixed now. We need to have a tightly focused, single-subject special session as soon as possible to fix this problem. Let?s recognize this serious public safety issue for what it is and spare the pet projects for another day.

House Republicans are ready to work on common-sense language that allows SROs to use all the skills they have to de-escalate volatile situations before things get out of hand in the blink of an eye. The sooner we can address this issue ? and only this issue ? in a special session, the better.

House and Senate Republicans have urged the governor to call a special session to clarify the SRO language that is now in law. We can?t let politics delay necessary action any longer. Minnesotans can?t afford to abide by the anti-police radicals ? especially when it comes to the safety of our children, teachers and staff in our schools.

It?s time for Democrat legislators to get serious about working on bipartisan solutions that we can pass in a single-subject special session. With full Republican support on this effort, we only need a few Democrats to get on board with doing the right thing.

Sincerely,

Shane
