Dear John,
Last month, Donald Trump promised to bring back his ban on Iranians coming to the U.S. and even expanding it. 1
Last week, NIAC called out Trump's former Iran Envoy Elliott Abrams for proposing jail time to prevent Americans from traveling to Iran, citing North Korea as the model for his plan. 2
Now, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-NJ) says he is considering legislation to ban travel to Iran, saying, “we have to go ahead and make it very clear to Americans that they cannot travel to certain places in the world”. 3
Nobody knows the risks of traveling to Iran better than Iranian Americans. The Iranian government's detentions of Iranian Americans as political pawns is abhorrent and terrifying, as is its broader repression of the people of Iran. But most Iranian Americans have family in Iran and a significant number still choose to visit Iran — and that must remain their choice.
No government, whether Iranian or American, should threaten the Iranian-American community with jail time to prevent us from being able to see our loved ones.
We must stop these attempts to restrict Iranian American rights before it's too late.
>> Call Menendez’s office to express your opposition to this proposal
>> Donate to support our efforts to fight this proposal and protect our rights
We will never stop fighting for our community’s rights and, with your support, we will not allow this proposal to come to fruition.
Thank you,
- NIAC Action Team
