!Al Weinrub, Presente!

Updates from energy democracy practitioners

** Dear Energy Democracy Community,
------------------------------------------------------------
We are writing to you with a very heavy heart that Al Weinrub completed the circle of life under the super blue moon on August 30. He was surrounded by love and song, and held by loved ones with whom he dreamt and fought for a better world.

Al held the vision for Energy Democracy Project for years with Denise Fairchild and Anthony Giancatarino that led to the publication of the book Energy Democracy: Advancing Equity in Clean Energy Solutions in 2017, so that we are not continually fighting narratives that are meant to co-opt or undermine real solutions to promote false solutions or obfuscate what we mean. It was his conviction and commitment that led to our ability to come together as an active collaboration to build a grassroots movement for energy justice across the country.

With deep history in movements for Black liberation, women’s liberation, national liberation movements, he authored many papers to advance energy democracy work in the U.S. His final article was his final warning to climate activists that will continue to ring in our ears: The New (Renewable) Energy Tyranny ([link removed]) .

Please join us to breathe life into his legacy.

Dubois and Daniel Elsberg collections, among others, as important historical archives for activists, researchers, historians, and scholars. To help increase the visibility of this archive and attract next generations to learn the history of our movement work led by Al's legacy, please submit short statements or tributes regarding the body of work represented by this collection and/or by Al's justice activism over the years:
What is your take on the importance, historical significance, challenges, or impact—personal or political—of this work?

All statements made here ([link removed]) by September 24 will be made part of the collection itself.
In lieu of flowers, Al's family suggests that donations be made to the Al Weinrub Justice Fund ([link removed]) to ensure that Al's legacy can continue to engage and inspire a national and international community.

** What is the Energy Democracy Project?
------------------------------------------------------------

Since the Energy Democracy National Tour in 2018, more than 40 energy democracy practitioners have been collaborating to build shared resources and strategies to democratize energy.

This decentralized group of collaborators work translocally to build community ownership and control of clean energy resources and to promote racial and economic equity as a cornerstone of the clean energy transition. We are not a typical coalition/alliance/network. We are the Energy Democracy Project.
