Hi friend,

Not only are we just two days away from our campaign’s last end-of-month fundraising deadline before the Mississippi Democratic primary , but we’re nearing the end of Black History Month, an important time to honor the lives and accomplishments of countless black Americans who paved the way before us.

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my own family’s legacy of hard work, public service, and caring for our communities -- and how you can help my dad make history again this November.

Born the son of slaves and living in one of the most dangerous periods in history for black Americans, my great-grandfather defied the odds and rose to affluence by starting his own businesses that benefited his community -- including a health insurance company, thirty-six funeral homes, and a local newspaper. He founded the very first black hospital in Mississippi, so that black women could give birth in comfortable beds on clean sheets instead of in the cotton fields. My father was ultimately born in that very hospital in 1953.

My grandfather, an avid agriculturalist, forged his own path in public service as one of the first black USDA County Extension Agents in Arkansas, before coming back to Mississippi to take care of the family businesses.

My dad made his own history when he became Mississippi’s first black member of Congress since Reconstruction and the nation’s first black Secretary of Agriculture for the Clinton Administration. When he sets his mind on something, my dad puts in the work and gives it his all to make it happen. He has done so in Washington before, and he can do it again as Mississippi’s next U.S. Senator. But not without your help.

We’re now less than two weeks away from the Mississippi Democratic primary election, and just two days out from our last end-of-month fundraising deadline before Mississippians decide who they want to go up against Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith in November.

Will you support my dad’s race to become the first black U.S. Senator from Mississippi since Reconstruction and help him move our state forward by chipping in $10 or whatever you can today?
