I would like to provide you with an important update on the water main break and massive sinkhole that have caused significant disruptions in the Cow Hollow neighborhood. As your Supervisor, I prioritize keeping you informed about issues affecting our community's safety and well-being.
According to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, “early in the morning of September 11, 2023 a 16-inch water main that was more than 70 years old ruptured at Union and Fillmore, sending water and debris into the street and some surrounding buildings. The flow of pressurized water dislodged the sand and soil underneath the intersection causing the pavement to buckle and creating a sinkhole.”
SFPUC has shared that regular water service has been restored to the neighborhood. However, if your water appears brown because of the break, run the COLD water tap nearest to your sidewalk for a few minutes until the water runs clear. Please review their guidance HERE.
If you were not able to get in touch with someone from the City yesterday or today, it’s not too late. Please reach out to Brian Cauley with the City Attorney’s Office, his contact information is included below. He will be able to help answer your questions regarding cleanup and claims:

I share your frustration with the lack of agency communication and recurring water main breaks. I’m actively working with staff to improve this moving forward. We will continue to coordinate with city agencies and communicate ongoing updates with the neighborhood as we learn more.
