Here are some recent updates.
* U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has asked ([link removed]) the pro-voting plaintiffs to respond to Alabama's request to reinstate a Republican-backed congressional map for the 2024 elections by Sept. 19. The map was struck down last week for violating a court order to create two majority-Black districts.
+ At the district court level, court-appointed experts have already begun ([link removed]) taking over the map drawing process to enact a new, fair map for the 2024 elections.
* Two Wisconsin voters filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit in the state Supreme Court to block Republican lawmakers from impeaching state Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz.
+ Also in Wisconsin, the state Senate is set to vote ([link removed]) on the removal of the state's top elections official, Meagan Wolfe, on Thursday. Republicans have enough votes to remove her.
* The U.S. Department of Justice defended ([link removed]) a North Dakota law, currently facing a right-wing legal challenge, that allows mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and be counted up to 13 days later.
* Georgia canceled ([link removed]) nearly 189,000 voter registrations ahead of the 2024 elections. Around 2,700 Georgians have updated their registration information since July, so the number of cancellations is lower than previously proposed.
* The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard ([link removed]) an appeal from Kari Lake and Mark Finchem on a lower court's decision to dismiss their lawsuit seeking to ban electronic voting machines in Arizona.
Here’s what to expect coming up.
* The Ohio Redistricting Commission will reconvene at 10 a.m. EDT to start the process of drawing new legislative maps for 2024. Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) has estimated ([link removed]) that the commission has until Sept. 22 to adopt a new map, a short timeline for the process.
* In Vermont, there is a motion to dismiss ([link removed]) hearing in a lawsuit filed by the Republican National Committee and the Vermont Republican Party challenging a statute that authorizes noncitizens in Winooski, Vermont, to vote on referendums involving the city’s school board and education budget as well as in municipal elections.
